Workshops That Inspired and Educated

A central highlight of our open day was the pair of unique workshops led by two exceptional facilitators: Jim Reich and Jodie Fowler. Each brought their own passion and expertise, generously sharing knowledge and sparking creativity among those who attended.

Weeds or Wild Food: Foraging with Jim Reich

Jim Reich guided participants on an enlightening journey around the walled garden, turning an ordinary stroll into an eye-opening foraging adventure. His workshop, "Weeds or Wild Food," challenged us all to reconsider the plants we often overlook. Far from being mere nuisances, Jim demonstrated how many so-called "weeds" are actually edible, nutritious, and delicious additions to our tables.

As we wandered through the beds and borders, Jim identified a multitude of wild plants thriving in our midst—nettles, wild garlic, dandelions, chickweed, sorrel, and more. He spoke about each plant’s culinary uses, nutritional benefits, and traditional roles in herbal medicine. Participants eagerly tasted samples and swapped stories about their own foraging experiences. By the end of the walk, skepticism had given way to excitement, and several people were already planning recipes to make use of their newfound knowledge.

Processing and Preserving: Afternoon with Abundant Wild Foods

The learning continued in the afternoon session, where Jim delved into the art of processing and preserving locally abundant wild foods. With baskets brimming with freshly gathered ingredients, participants rolled up their sleeves to chop, mix, and bottle the bounty. Jim demonstrated techniques for making wild herb pestos, infusing oils and vinegars, drying herbs for teas, and even simple fermentation.

Hapa Zome with Jodie Fowler: Crafting Beauty from Nature

Meanwhile, creativity flourished in another corner of the garden as Jodie Fowler introduced her group to the ancient Japanese art of Hapa Zome. This hands-on workshop invited participants to engage all their senses, as they explored the vibrant world of natural pigments and dyes.
